Professional - A currently employed (or within the last two years) as an administrative professional, or a holder of the CPS or CAP ratings, or an employed teacher of business education.

Student - A full-time student in business education: maximum 4-years in Student classification.

Associate - Available to businesses, educational institutions or individuals who share the objectives of IAAP, and who wish to support its programs.  This classification allows the company to own the membership and specify a contact person for the company.

In the United States, its territories, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands of the U.S., and Canada. Membership may be through chapters and divisions, or as a member-at-large (who may choose to join a division). When joining a chapter and/or division, application with dues and fee are to be submitted through the appropriate unit; otherwise application with dues and fee may be submitted directly to IAAP Headquarters. Annual Association dues and processing fee are applicable to all classifications of membership (contact IAAP Headquarters to locate a chapter near you). International membership or affiliation is available outside the above-stated areas. Such applications may be requested from IAAP Headquarters. IAAP dues are not deductible as a charitable contribution for U.S. federal tax purposes, but may be deductible as a business expense. To comply with USPS Section 422.221, DMM: Dues for members include $11 subscription to The OfficePRO® which may not be deducted from gross dues.

An Administrative Professional is defined by IAAP as "an executive assistant who possesses a mastery of office skills, demonstrates the ability to assume responsibility without direct supervision, exercises initiative and judgment, and makes decisions within the scope of assigned authority." A CPS® recipient is one who has passed the examination administered by the Institute for Certification, a department of IAAP.
