Cyber Black Hole

Sometimes I wish that we did not rely on modern technology so much. Case in point, submitting a resume for employment. I know that there are so many people looking for jobs these days and that no one can read every resume that crosses their desk but this word recognition has to go, Think I am fustrated?

I sent in my resume over the internet and filled out all of the questions required including my skills. The position is for an executive administrative assistant. According to the job posting all of the skills required were all things I have been doing for the past 11 years. All of these skills (words) were on the resume somewhere. OK, so I get an e-mail this morning......

Thank you for your resume but my skills do not match those on the job posting....UGH! Thank God, that at the company there is a contact that I developed that was going to take my resume to the generalist that is handling the posting.

Welcome to the wonderful world of job hunting.

Roberta, I know it is frustrating, but the right job is out there for you somewhere. Here's a blog posting on resumes I did in the past that you might find helpful: http://community.iaap-hq.org/IAAPHQ/IAAPHQ/Directory/BlogViewer/Default.aspx?BlogKey=b9fe3948-28a6-4db0-8606-020b2e13a0b0

I’m in total agreement regarding the resume black-hole. Recently, I submitted a resume to a company that required a CPS designation AND involvement with IAAP. I have both credentials. I also met many of the job description requirements and I made sure the keywords were in my resume. I thought for sure this was a shoe-in to receive a call for a phone interview. Nope, I received the obligatory “thank you, but no thank you” email. It is very frustrating!
