HISTORY OF THE ARKANSAS-OKLAHOMA DIVISION, INC. OF IAAP
ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE LANDS OF ARKANSAS AND OKLAHOMA...
The Arkansas-Oklahoma Division was born in 1958 (records do not indicate the exact date) when two chapters from Arkansas (Fort Smith and Little Rock) merged with five chapters from Oklahoma (Ada, Chickasha, Redbud, now known as OKC, Lawton and Will Rogers).
The chapters in the two states became a division at the request of the Southwest District Vice President, Marie E. Bishop, in a letter dated September 18, 1958. There were only two chapters in Arkansas; and, in order to create more unification within the district, it seemed reasonable to combine them with an adjoining organization.
The officers of the Oklahoma organization served as officers of the new Arkansas-Oklahoma Division. Mrs. Mildred Collier Steelman of Oklahoma City served as the first Division President.
From these seven chapters with a total membership of 172 in 1958 (44 in Arkansas and 128 in Oklahoma), the Arkansas-Oklahoma Division has, with the excellent leadership and continuing perseverance of its officers and members, grown into its current organization.
Although Arkansas and Oklahoma were two separate state organizations before the merger in 1958, both have always actively participated in all of the association’s activities; i.e., Certification Programs (CPS and CAP), Administrative Professionals Week, Retirement Trust Foundation, Research and Education Foundation, and the IAAP Student Chapter Program.
The A-O Division belongs to the Southwest District of IAAP, and we became incorporated in 2005 upon the recommendation of IAAP Headquarters.
The rich history and success of the Arkansas-Oklahoma Division is due in large part to wonderful visionaries who volunteered their time and talent to serve as leaders of our great association.
